Blackheads are the bane of many people’s existence. Whether the blackheads are on your face, back, chest, or in this case, your nose — they are a nuisance. What, specifically, is a blackhead though? Let’s first define this annoying skin condition; it is a kind of acne or comedonal acne. Comedonals occur when pores become clogged by your dead skin cells and the natural oil you create, aka sebum.
These bothersome black bumps that show up on the skin can best be described as open comedones. And, it’s not just dead skin cells and sebum that are the culprit here. You can also blame exposure to pollutants and environmental dirt. These four elements, mixed together, create the perfect environment for blackheads.
Why Are Blackheads Black?
Already, the fact that you have a form of acne on your nose is irritating; as if that isn’t upsetting enough it is also dark in color. Dairy is something so many of us love, but milk can be the reason for your acne! In a study, researchers found that those who drank skim milk were 44% more likely to produce acne. From 205 patients that were seeing dermatologists for acne and 358 that were also seeing dermatologists for reasons separate from acne, the patients with blackheads and other forms of acne were drinking significantly more cow’s milk.
If you were to poll a group of people right now, you’d be hard bent to find someone who doesn’t love their starches; from cookies to potatoes and rice to sugar-heavy drinks. Unfortunately for us, starchy foods are what we need to avoid in addition to milk. Having starches can cause a decline in our health and the appearance of our skin. Consuming starches subsequently causes acne and, more specifically, those dreaded blackheads. This is especially true if you are prone to acne.
High-glycemic foods, i.e. starches, immediately cause a rise in your blood sugar and exasperate any acne you might be experiencing. When your blood sugar is high, the chances of inflammation in your body increase. This unwanted inflammation then causes the sebum that is to blame for all the blackheads.
What You Put on Your Face Matters
Since the blackheads are on your nose, it is in your best interest to be sure the products you put on your face are not creating the problem or, at the very least, not making it worse. If you wear any kind of makeup, look out for comedogenic ingredients in your products.
Comedogenic means that the products you are using are more likely to create comedonals, essentially clogging your pores. Thoroughly reading the ingredients on the skincare and makeup products you buy is vital. Some to avoid are cocoa butter, linseed oil, coconut oil, and others.
Seriously, listen to us when we say we highly recommend that you do your research. If your diet is great, but you’re still questioning what can be the cause of your blackheads, there’s a good chance that comedogenic products are at the root of the problem. Aside from advising you to research the ingredients, our suggestion to those of you who are predisposed to blackheads and other types of acne is: use sheer cosmetics. Shop for products that say they are “acne-fighting” or refrain from using makeup.
Too Much Humidity
Exposure to humidity is believed to significantly affect skin conditions like blackheads and other types of acne. When the atmosphere is excessively humid, it can cause microbial balance disturbance to your skin. When this occurs, it can cause an abundance of skin maladies like blackheads.
Humidity can cause the function of the skin barrier to be greatly affected. While humidity is unavoidable in some places you can make sure to keep your skin dry and use cleansing products to prevent the manifestation of blackheads.
Remember that ultimately, proper hygiene, using prescribed medication, proper skincare, and a healthy diet will be your best course of action when it comes to avoiding blackheads. While there are unavoidable circumstances, there is a lot you can do to care for your skin.
